TENNESSEE VALLEY CHAPTER
AMERICAN VACUUM SOCIETY
P. O. Box 5734
Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37831-5734
But first, please change the symposium date on your calendars to Tuesday, May 21st. In the last newsletter it was announced that the symposium would be held May 14th. Shortly after the newsletter went out, circumstances forced us to make this date change.
This year, the Chapter's annual spring symposium will be sponsored jointly with the East Tennessee Section of the Materials Research Society. The symposium, together with the equipment exhibit, will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 1996 at the Holiday Inn, 304 Cedar Bluff Road, just off I-40 in West Knoxville. Please note the change in location from the last several years. While there will be a registration fee for the symposium, the equipment exhibit is free to the general public and all are welcome to attend. More information will appear in the next newsletter. Meantime, if you have access to the Web, periodically check the TVC-AVS Web page at http://www.vacuum.org/tvc.html.

Dr. Hatcher came to the Distinguished Scientist program in 1986 from the University of South Carolina and holds joint appointments as a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at UTK and as a Distinguished Scientist in the ORNL Environmental Sciences Division. He is a recognized authority on the structural geology and tectonics of mountain chains and on the evolution of the earth's crust. In addition, he is frequently called upon to address applied problems in radioactive waste management, seismicity and engineering geology. Dr. Hatcher has served on numerous national boards and commissions, as president of the Geological Society of America in 1993, and is currently president of the American Geological Institute. In this talk, he will tell us how the physical and structural properties of rocks can tell us about mountains and how they grow.
Dinner reservations are required. To make yours please contact John Caughman at 423-574-5131 or by e-mail by 4:00 PM on March 1st.
New Awards Chair
We are pleased to inform the chapter that Anna Swan has agreed to be the new Awards chairperson. The Awards chair is responsible for our educational outreach program. As described in the last newsletter the educational outreach currently sponsored by the Chapter comes in two forms. One is equipment grants made to schools that submit proposals for classroom equipment to be used to further science education. Each fall the board decides how much money to allocate to this program and the maximum dollar amount per grant. Proposals are solicited in the spring of the following year, and adequate time is allowed after the end of the school year for teachers to submit proposals. After the deadline proposals are reviewed and ranked by the board. Grant money is then awarded to the top proposals up to the allocated amount. The other form of educational outreach is that of travel grants for school teachers to attend the AVS national meeting held in the fall of each year. Usually only one or two of these are awarded each year based on applications solicited, submitted, reviewed and awarded at the same time as the equipment grants.
Along with welcoming Anna to her new position the chapter also recognizes and thanks Lee Berry for his contributions as Awards chair for the past several years. Welcome Anna; thanks for the great job Lee!
