Program: The Making of Half-Lives

Speaker: Carolyn Jourdan - Director/Producer of Documentary Half Lives

About the Speaker and Program:

Ms. Jourdan is a graduate of the University of Tennessee's Engineering and Law Schools. Her career path following law school led her to a position of counsel to the Senate Committee on Environmental and Public Works. In this position, Ms. Jourdan acted as liaison between lawmakers generating policy on nuclear waste disposal and many disparate public groups interested in those policies. This experience ultimately led her to conceive and produce a documentary film on nuclear science in America.

As described in Metro Pulse magazine, "Half Lives is a balanced look at the fifty year history of nuclear science in America. Without editorializing, it sets the never-before-filmed insights of Manhattan Project scientists and workers alongside the industry's unforeseen problems and the comments of anti-nuclear protesters." The film has aired on many PBS affiliates (locally, it was shown October 4 on Channels 2/15) and will most likely be broadcast nationally in the near future.

Reviews of Half Lives have appeared in a wide variety of publications, including Scientific American and People. An estimated 15 million people have seen or read about the film.

Ms. Jourdan will talk about her experiences in creating and producing this highly acclaimed film.
